"Teamwork makes the dream work."  I bet we've all heard that saying at some point from a leader when the team seems to be working together.  As cheesy as it may sound, there is a lot of truth in that saying.  The best teams are the ones who work together and help each other win.  They realize that every individual, role, and task is important to the business and everyone from top down is committed to helping the team succeed.  At Chick-fil-A, we want to create a culture of teamwork!

Think through the following questions:

  • What are the best teams you've seen (maybe in sports, music, organizations)? What do you think that great teams do well?

  • Think about a dysfunctional team that you've seen or have been a part.  What are things that keep them from working together?

  • What are the benefits of a team that supports one another and works together?  What are the challenges if they choose not to?

Great teams rise and fall together because they realize every person has an important role and the success of the overall team is dependent on everyone executing their role.  Consequently, great teams are committed to helping others win and ensuring that everyone has the support they need to excel in their positions. As a leader, you set the tone for your team in regard to a culture of helping others win.  Review the 3 concepts of helping others win (winning is a team effort, there are many ways to help others win, helping others win is part of everyone's job description).

Think through the following questions:

  • How are the ways that you currently help others win on a daily basis?  Are there other ways in which you think you could help others win (i.e. coaching, training, motivating, challenging, etc.)

  • Are there things in the business that you aren't willing or hesitant to do?  If so, how do you think that might impact the culture of the team?

  • Do you think your team currently has a culture of helping others win?  Beside helping others with tasks, do they look for different ways to help others win like coaching, training, or motivating?

TAKE ACTION

It is good when one or two people on a team have a mindset of helping others win, but when everyone on the team has that mindset then your team's potential is unlimited.  However, to get your team to this level will start with you as a leader.  Not only do you need to model the behaviors of helping others win, but you need to remind people daily of the behaviors they can demonstrate to help others win.  See if over the next month you can begin to challenge your team to help others win in multiple ways throughout their shifts.

  • SELF - Try to help at least one person win on every shift in which you are a part.  It could be helping them with a task, coaching someone on a particular role, developing/mentoring someone on an area of the business, challenging someone in their performance, or just encouraging someone who is having a hard day.  Try to make it a daily habit to help others win.

  • TEAM - Challenge your team to try and find ways to help others win on each shift.  Empower them to take action to help others with tasks when they are free.  Or coach them on how they can provide feedback, challenge, or motivate others on a shift.  Be sure to recognize team members you see helping others win.

CHARACTERISTICS OF MASTERY

Looks for opportunities to help others win each and every day; is able to identify multiple ways to help others win; is willing to support needs of team when asked; practices humility and willingness to help with any task regardless of preference; creates a culture amongst team to help others win; is able to identify strengths and weaknesses of team members and help them succeed within their roles in the business.
